Seeing God's New Testament Economy in the Book of Acts - Part 2 of 2

   Did you know that just like the U.S. has an economy, God also has an economy?  Most people when they hear the word economy think about jobs, wages, and the country's deficit. The word economy is actually in the Bible in Ephesians 1:10, 3:9, and 1 Timothy 1:4. 

   I like the footnote in the Recovery Version of the New Testament  because it helped me understand  the spiritual meaning of this  word:  "The Greek word oikonomia, means house law, household arrangement or administration, ... "

   But what is God's plan or household administration? I 
I like the clear way Witness Lee explains what God's economy is on pages 561-562:

"After studying all the books of the Bible for many years, we began to see the overall revelation in the Scriptures concerning God's New Testament economy.  Through the word, the Lord showed us that in this economy the Triune God became a man in the Son.  This means that the accomplishment of God's New Testament economy began with the incarnation.  Through Christ's human living, death, resurrection, and ascension everything necessary for the accomplishment of God's economy was done.  After breathing the Spirit into the disciples essentially (John 20:22) [this is the arrow with the word Dispensing under it], the Lord, in His ascension, poured out the Spirit upon the Body economically (Acts 2:17).  The outpouring of the Spirit was the completion of the accomplishment of God's New Testament economy.  Now the Triune God as the processed all-inclusive Spirit is both within His chosen people and upon them, and with them He is carrying out the New Testament econom" (Lee, Witness. Life-Study of Acts. Anaheim: Living Stream Ministry, 1985, Print). 

     The Lord being within His believers isn't a once for all thing.  The Lord wants us to receive Him as our daily spiritual bread.  When I was in college, I read a book called The Economy of God.  I have never forgotten how this book helped me to see that all that the Lord passed through are just like the ingredients in a smoothie. His incarnation is like the banana, His human living like strawberries, His death like protein powder, His ascension like yogurt, and His outpouring like coconut milk. Every time we call, every time we sing, every time we read the Bible, every time we tell someone about our faith in Christ, every time we fellowship with other believers, we are drinking all the rich ingredients embodied in this divine smoothie.  And something brother Lee's ministry has etched into my own heart is this spiritual drink is the divine supply to carry out God's economy on this earth today!

Seeing God's New Testament Economy in the Book of Acts - Part 1 of 2

     The book of Acts closes with weakness and compromise.  How did that happen?  Witness Lee points out in Chapter 65 of the  Life Study of Acts that the boldness Peter and John showed in Acts 2-5 changed.

     Soon after the apostle Paul returned from his third journey to the Gentile world, he went up to Jerusalem to visit the leading brothers in the church in Jerusalem.  In their conversation James boasts about the thousands of Jews in Jerusalem that are keeping the law of Moses  (Acts 21:20) and then he charges Paul with apostasy from the law of Moses (Acts 21:21).  In order to fix it, James told Paul he had to join some others in a Nazarite vow.

     Before I read these chapters from the Life-Study of Acts I didn’t get what was going on in this part of Acts.  Here's a helpful excerpt on page 489: 

In chapter twenty-one of Acts we see that James and the elders in Jerusalem had formed a mixture of God’s New Testament economy with the Old Testament dispensation.  Actually James and the elders were even promoting this mixture.  Of course, they did not neglect faith in Christ, but there was a religious mixture in Jerusalem.  We all need to have a clear understanding of this (Lee, Witness. Life-Study of Acts. Anaheim: Living Stream Ministry, 1985, Print). 

    At first I didn’t get the importance of this.  In these chapters Witness Lee underscores the things that  should have been read flags to Peter and John when Judaism started to pervade the early church life in Acts.  He points out in this chapter that when the Lord was transfigured, God stopped  Peter when he made a proposal to build a tent for Moses (who represented the Old Testament law) and Elijah (who represented the Old Testament prophets).  And God’s own word to them was:  This is My beloved Son, hear Him! 

      Not only did they forget that speaking, but it's almost like everyone forgot the great commission at the end of Matthew on discipling all the nations, and  the Lord's own word in Acts 1:8  before His ascension on their being His witnesses to the uttermost parts of the earth.  

     Witness Lee points out that Peter and John didn't say anything to counter what was going on, and Paul who was personally sent by God to preach the gospel to the Gentiles seems to have lost his boldness because of his own Jewish background. That only left God with one alternative and that was to intervene Himself and cause an uproar to occur (v. 27) to stop Paul from fulfilling that Nazarite vow. Why this uproar was extremely important will be the subject of my last post on Acts.

Prayer, the Spirit, & the Word - The Way the Lord Carries Out His Work in the Book of Acts

  Prayer, the Spirit, and the word.  That's all--just three things that God uses to carry out His work on earth.  

  I really liked reading chapter 49 of the Life-Study of Acts because it made it crystal clear that God carries out all of His work on earth through our prayer, His Spirit, and the word of God.  That sounded a lot different than what I would naturally think!!

   This chapter touched me because in another week I will be helping distribute at our city's university free Recovery Versions of the New Testament through Bibles for America. Anyway while reading this chapter, these parts on pages 426 and 431 were meaningful to me : 

  If we would have the power and impact in our gospel preaching, we need to pray...  There is no shortcut to having power in preaching the gospel.  We need to pray, we need to learn the Word, and we need to be one spirit with the Lord.  In 1 Corinthians 6:17 Paul says, "He who is joined to the Lord is one spirit."  We need to stand upon this word, claim the fact, and practice it.  We should say, "Lord, this is Your word, I stand on Your word, Lord, and claim the fact that I am one spirit with You.  Lord, I ask You to vindicate Your word that You are truly one with me.  Lord, I intend to speak for You and even to speak You forth.  Lord, vindicate the word and show that You are really one with Your followers."  We all need to pray such a prayer.  This is the prayer that will be heard in the heavens and by all the demons.  If we are one spirit with the Lord in preaching the gospel, we shall have power and impact.  Therefore, let us not trust in eloquence.  Let us trust in prayer, in the Word, and in the Spirit (Lee, Witness. Life-Study of Acts. Anaheim: Living Stream Ministry, 1985, Print). 

The Lord is continually bringing me back to this word--everything comes out of our prayer in oneness with His Spirit standing on His Word!

From the Life-Study of Acts - Seeing God's Move & Satan's Frustration in Acts 14

    God's move and Satan's frustration always seem to go neck in neck.  When I read through the New Testament, I saw in the Gospels over and over how the Pharisees and scribes were either plotting to kill Jesus or spying on Him and stirring up the people against Him. And in the book of Acts we see the same thing happening.  In Acts 14 there are several accounts of Saul and Barnabas preaching the gospel in some Gentile cities and some Jews came purposely  to stir up trouble:

    Acts 14:2 says, "But the Jews who were disobedient stirred up and ill-affected the mind of the Gentiles against the brothers." 
    
    And then in Acts 15:1 and 5 we see that some believers that had previously been Pharisees were trying to force the Gentile converts to be circumcised. This didn't mean much to me until I read Witness Lee's comment on page 360 in Chapter 42 of the Life-Study of Acts:

Actually when this heresy concerning circumcision arose at Jerusalem in tLife-Study of Acts. Anaheim: Living Stream Ministry, 1985, Print).
he very beginning, Peter should have exercised the gift that the Lord had given him to clear up the cloudy situation in Jerusalem concerning God's New Testament economy [see Ephesians 3:9-11], according to the revelation that the Lord had given him and the other apostles in Acts 1:8 and the vision he had received at Joppa in Acts 10 concerning the Gentiles.  If he had done this, the Judaic heresy would have been cut off at the very beginning in Jerusalem and would not have spread to the churches in the Gentile world.  But he failed to do this, so Paul had to rise up and perform the surgery to cut off the racial cancer that would have destroyed God's New Testament economy and killed the Body of Christ (Lee, Witness.

    It almost looks like as soon as God starts to move, Satan gets an idea of what's happening and starts plotting a counter attack.  I really like the revelation in this Life-Study because the importance of what Paul did here didn't really touch me until I saw through this chapter what was at stake. God needs  the Body of Christ--a Body that is comprised of both Jews and Gentiles of many races and languages--to be built up to express the reality that God  has broken down all the middle walls of partition and has made all the believers truly one.  I really appreciate that this vision is so clear in the ministry of both Watchman Nee and his faithful coworker Witness Lee.

From the Life-Study of Acts - How is Acts a Book on God's Move & Prayer?

    Acts is obviously a book on the acts of the disciples after the Lord's resurrection, but did you ever think it was also a book on prayer?    I was listening to a message on Life Study of the Bible on Acts 10 (Radio Program #29) where both Cornelius and Peter were praying before they received divine instructions that related to God's spread to the Gentile nations.  

One of the believers that was giving commentary that day said that Acts is a book on God's move and also a book on prayer.  Then he said, "Every time the  Lord moved through the apostles and the disciples it was because of their prayer.  Prayer and God's move go hand in hand." 

 This got me thinking. I decided to go back through Acts Chapter 1-10 this afternoon and try to find as many of these references as I could, and here are the ones I found: 

Acts 1:14  These all continued steadfastly with one accord in prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. [The prayer for 10 days before Pentecost.]

Acts 1:24  And they prayed and said, You Lord Knower of the hearts of all, show us clearly the one whom You have chosen of these two  [In their prayer for who should replace Judas.]

Acts 2:42  And they continued steadfastly in the teaching and the fellowship of the apostles, and the breaking of bread and the prayers 

Acts 3:1  Now Peter and John were going up into the temple at the ninth-hour prayer; [Afterward the lame man is healed by Peter.]

Acts 4:24  And when they heard this, they lifted up their voice with one accord to God and said, Sovereign Master, You are the One who has made heaven and earth and the sea and all things in them, [The church's praise and prayer after Peter and John are released by the Sanhedrin.]

Acts 6:4  But we will continue steadfastly in prayer and the ministry of the word.

Acts 6:6  Whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. [For choosing seven to serve tables.]

Acts 8:15  Who went down and prayed for them so that they might receive the Holy Spirit;  [Phillip preaching the gospel to those in Samaria.]

Acts 9:11  And the Lord said to him, rise up and go to the lane called Straight, and seek in the house of Judas a man from Tarsus named Saul; for behold he is praying;

Acts 9:40  And Peter put them all outside; and kneeling down, he prayed; and he turned to the body and said, Tabitha, rise up.  And she opened her eyes; and when she saw Peter, she sat up.

Acts 10:1-2  Now there was in Caesarea a certain man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Cohort, devout and  one who feared God with all his household, giving many alms to the people and beseeching God continually.

 Acts 10:4  And he looked intently at him and became terrified and said, What is it, Lord?  And he said to him, Your prayers and your alms have ascend as a memorial before God.

Acts 10:9  And on the next day as they were journeying and drawing near to the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray around the sixth hour.

Acts 10:31  And he said Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God.

I think just going through these 10 chapters is pretty convincing, don't you? When I shared all of this with my husband, he said this reminded him of a quote by Watchman Nee that is on my refrigerator: 

 "Why do we work so much and pray so little when God accomplishes more by our prayer than by our work?"

How Did the Gospel Reach the Gentiles in Acts 10?

   The gospel didn't just stay in Judea.  In Acts 10 we we see the gospel taking a definite turn to the Gentile world. This chapter opens up with a devout, Gentile centurion named Cornelius  praying and then an angel telling him to send for Peter who was staying in Joppa.  Meanwhile back in Joppa, Peter was also praying on the rooftop, and he receives a strange vision of a giant sheet filled with all kinds of animals that are unclean to Jews.  


    It's fascinating that exactly at the same time Peter's thinking about what this strange vision means, Cornelius's men are knocking at the door (Acts 10:22)!  This is a divine coincidence! As the chapter progresses, we can see Peter starting to make connections,  and this is really evident when he tells the ones whom Cornelius has gathered in verse 34-35:  "And opening his  mouth, Peter said, In truth I perceive that God is not a respecter of persons, but in every nation he who fears Him and works righteousness is acceptable to Him."  

    In these chapters Witness Lee points out that Peter and some of the other disciples just couldn't let go of their Jewish background,  and this made it difficult for them to fully get what the Lord was getting at in Acts 1:8 about their being witnesses to the remotest parts of the earth. This excerpt is on page 271:

"Although the disciples heard this word, they did not realize what the Lord was saying.  In this example the Lord Jesus was indicating that the disciples would need to break through the Old Testament dispensation.  From the disciples' experience we see that to hear is one thing, but to realize and experience what we hear is another.  Peter, for example, heard the Lord's word in 1:8, but he nevertheless had difficulty with the Lord's fulfillment of this word" (Lee, Witness. Life-Study of Acts. Anaheim: Living Stream Ministry, 1985, Print).

This Life-Study points out that besides seeing Peter jump a giant cultural hurdle in Acts 10, we also see the Lord fulfilling the word prophesied in Isaiah 42:6B "... I have kept You as a covenant for the people, as a light for the nations" (the Gentiles were called the nations in the Old Testament).  According to the truth in Ephesians 2 ,the Lord's Body is composed of both Jews and Gentiles.  And through Peter's sharing the gospel in Cornelius' home, we  see this starting to happen!

What Vision Did Saul Receive at His Conversion in Acts 9:3-8?

     Saul's conversion in Acts 9 is incredible.  As one of the top opposers, he was hauling the believers off to jail (Acts 8:3).  The Bible tells us that he even got letters from the high priests so that he could go to other cities and bring them bound back to Jerusalem for sentencing (Acts 9:2)!  He actually thought he was doing God's will, but God had a plan up His sleeve to bring this Jew to his knees.

     The record of Saul's conversion still amazes me.  I can just picture it in my mind-- Saul and his men so determined to squelch these new upstarts.   And then all of a sudden as they're walking along the road to Damascus, a great light from heaven brings Saul to his knees.  

Suddenly out of heaven he hears a voice speaking to him:   And he fell on the ground and heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? And he said, Who are You, Lord?  And He said, I am Jesus, whom you persecute. Acts 9:4-5  

  I never knew the significance of the Lord's question to Saul until I heard Witness Lee speak on this when he gave the Life Study training on Acts. When I read this chapter last week, I  liked his explanation on page 206 in the Life-Study of Acts about the vision Saul saw that day:

This is a corporate Me comprising Jesus the Lord and all His believers.  Saul did not have this revelation, thinking that he was persecuting Stephen and other Jesus-followers in the way he considered heresy (24:14).  He did not know that when he persecuted these he persecuted Jesus, for they were one with Him by being united to Him through their faith in Him.  He considered that he was persecuting people on earth, never thinking that he touched anyone in heaven...To him this was a unique revelation in the entire universe.  By this he began to see that the Lord Jesus and His believers are one great person--the wonderful "Me" (Lee, Witness. Life-Study of Acts. Anaheim: Living Stream Ministry, 1985, Print).

      This Saul was renamed Paul much like Simon was renamed Peter.  And when you read  Paul's other epistles in the New Testament, you see many references to the Body of Christ.  The more I  read the Bible and listen to these messages put out by Living Stream Ministry, I sense God's desire to gain the reality of this Body on earth today,     

Blog Update 8-27-12:  This afternoon while making dinner I listened to The Conversion of Saul on Life Study of the Bible by Living Stream Ministry.  It is Program 25, I liked how he described the revelation Saul saw on the road to Damascus.  He saw that he was just persecuting Jesus' followers and that Jesus was dead, but to his surprise Jesus made it clear to him that He is not only the Head in the heavens but also the Body on the earth.

How did the Lord Spread the Gospel in Acts 8?

     Throughout the New Testament there are references to the Body of Christ.  I have come to learn this is not just a term or a label for the believers--there's a reality behind it.  Through my reading the Life-Study of Acts  I've seen  that the Lord as the Head of His Body carries out His gospel work through the members of His Body on earth.  Peter preached the gospel for the first time in Acts 2.  In Acts 8:1 it's evident that the Lord used some persecution by the Jews to send many of these believers to other places: 

Acts 8:1 says There occurred in that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and all were scattered throughout the countries of Judea and Samaria except the apostles.

  This persecution as the above verse shows caused a great scattering of the thousands of believers in Jerusalem to several other countries.  Acts 8:4 tells us what these believers  spontaneously did--Those therefore who were scattered went about the land bringing the good news of the word.  I like the way Witness Lee connected in Chapter 22 of the Life-Study of Acts this event to what the Lord told the disciples in Acts 1:8: 

"It was sovereign of God that the scattering of the believers from Jerusalem to other localities through the persecution should carry out the spreading of the gospel for the fulfillment of the Lord's word in Acts 1:8...Although Satan instigated the persecution against the church, the Lord is over Satan, and whatever Satan does is under the Lord's sovereignty.  Therefore the persecution in Chapter 8 actually worked out for the spreading of the gospel" (Lee, Witness. Life-Study of Acts. Anaheim: Living Stream Ministry, 1985, Print). 

     Then in Acts 8:5 there's a record of how the Lord used Phillip to preach the gospel to those in Samaria.  This was the first time the gospel was preached to those who were not pure Jews

(Page 182).  Because the Lord did not want His Body to be divided,  Peter and John came to lay their hands on these believers. They did this to  show that the believers in Samaria were not a separate work but the spread of the one Body of Christ to another region. You can really see in so many ways Acts really shows the blueprint of so many things concerning the church life of the early believers right after the Lord's ascension.
