What Does Hebrews 2:10 Say About Christ?

Whenever I've thought of captains in the past, what came to my mind were sports captains and sea captains, but never a spiritual captain.  I learned in my Recovery Version of the New Testament though that In Hebrews 2:10 the Greek word for author can also be translated captain.

I took this picture this summer at a nearby marina.
For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and through whom are all things in leading many sons into glory, to make the Author [Greek Captain] of their salvation perfect through sufferings.  Hebrews 2:10

There's a lot in this verse, and you can get the rest of it by reading chapter 9 of the Life-Study of Hebrews.  As I read parts of this chapter, I saw that the Lord's life had a goal beyond just coming to die as a sacrifice for our sins.  He was actually as Witness Lee shares in this chapter fighting to be brought into glory so that He could become the Captain of our salvation.  I never saw this so clearly before--and this excerpt on page 102-103 explains how:
The Lord Jesus did not suddenly enter into glory.   During all of His days on earth, a fighting process was going on.  The seed of glory was in Him and was fighting its way out.  If you read the Gospels, you will see that the life of Jesus was a life of fighting….He was always fighting the battle for the growth of the seed of glory. He fought that the glory might come out and that He might be brought into glory….He pioneered the way into glory. Therefore, He spontaneously has become qualified to be the leader of those entering into glory. So He is the Captain of our salvation (Lee, Witness. Life-Study of Hebrews. Anaheim: Living Stream Ministry, 1975, Print).
Then later in the chapter he uses the classic example of a carnation seed to show what's spiritually happening to us.  When the Lord regenerated us, Christ as the seed of glory came into us. And now through all of our experiences  this seed of glory is fighting through all the "dirt" in us to grow to maturity and finally blossom.

Witness Lee also points out here that the carnation blossom is actually its glorification.  In all the stages of our Christian journey, Christ as our Captain is also leading us into glory.  And that's not all. Hebrews also brings out that our Lord today is also our Great High Priest interceding for us.  I was touched in my reading to see that He is praying for us that His life within us would fully grow to maturity.

You can  also listen to live excerpts from these messages on Hebrews on The Life-Study of the Bible with Witness Lee.  You will enjoy listening to both  the excerpts  from these spoken messages and the helpful and enlightening commentary of the radio hosts.
