Make Your Own Home Made Remedies - Peppermint Tea & Oil

For 12 years I lived next door to a horticulturist whose yards looked like they came from a Southern Living magazine!  Over the years she gave me all kinds of advice. When she was dying from cancer, she gave me permission to dig up whatever plants I wanted.  I didn't know half the names of many of the plants that lined her garden path, but I did take some of her herbs--peppermint, lemon balm, and feverfew.  when I moved a year later, I transplanted them, and they have done beautifully.

A few years into growing them at my new house, I thought to myself, I am buying peppermint tea, I wonder if I could dry this and make my own.  So I sort of stumbled into the art of making my own tea.  I did a lot of research in the early years.  Here's what I found out about peppermint:

1.  It's an antibacterial,  antiviral, and antifungal!!

2.  It relieves allergies and asthma.

3.  It aids in digestion.

4.  It eases a headache and nausea.

5.  Relieves respiratory complaints--so it's great for colds, coughs, and the flu!

DRYING PEPPERMINT:  I found out it's very easy to dry herbs.  Just cut them early in the day or in the cool of the evening, and lay them on a rack, a plate, cardboard, or brown paper bag.  Let them sit for 10-14 days until they are totally dry.

STORE PEPPERMINT:  Use your fingers to strip the leaves off the stems into a large bowl.  Then put in a mason jar and label.

BREWING A CUP OF MEDICINAL TEA:    Put 1-2 teaspoons of your dried tea into a metal tea holder and place it into the hot water.  Put a plate over the top to keep the essential oils from evaporating and let it steep for about 10 minutes.

…and the fruit thereof shall be for food, and the leaf thereof for medicine.  Ezekiel 47:12B

Peppermint Oil

Here's a link for how to make my own peppermint essential oil.  The directions are really simple to follow to make your own.  I've done it and bought my own small roller jars to use to rub on for headaches.  It's a very fragrant oil.

Note:  I grow and dry herbs as a gardening project.  Be sure to check with a medical professional if you are pregnant, on medication or have any questions or concerns.
