Do you know that you are saved? How can you prove it? You can with just three verses. On October 1 we read the chapter on the assurance of salvation from The Basic Elements of the Christian Life put out by Bibles for America. I made these points and verses into flash cards to help us all learn them.
Three Means of the Assurance of Salvation
1. God says so - The first one is so simple. what does God's word say about your salvation? The booklet gives a number of references that I looked up and am including here.
God's word tells us the way of salvation is Christ: John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that everyone who believes into Him would not perish, but would have eternal life.
2. The Holy Spirit bears Witness "Not only do we have God's word outside us telling us we are saved, we also have a witness inside us telling us the same thing" (p. 12).
Romans 8:16 The Spirit Himself witnesses with our spirit that we are children of God.
Look at Romans 8:16 a bit more carefully, there is a capital S for the Spirit which obviously refers to the Spirit of God, and the lowercase s refers to man's human spirit. We have Someone within us that tells us that we are children of God! You can check out more verses on man's spirit by looking up Job 32:8, 1 Cor. 2:11, 1 Thess. 5:23, and Hebrews 4:12.
3. Our love for the brothers is proof
1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed out of death into life because we love the brothers.
The booklet shares that this love for other believers is a spontaneous result of our salvation. We also went over the next section on the security of salvation, but I'll blog about that later this week.
