Why Should a Believer Get Baptized?

Why should believers get baptized?  There's a lot of verses on it in the Bible and  last Friday we went over many of them with the  four  college students who meet with us.  For starters we went over verses from Acts about baptism beginning with Peter's word to those who had gathered at Pentecost.  Acts is the record of the apostles and the churches they had established after the Lord's ascension.  So that makes it a good place to start.  When you look at these verses in Acts, it is clear the disciples were faithful to what the Lord had commanded them to do after His ascension:

Matthew 28:19-20A  Go therefore and disciple all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. ...

Acts 2:38, 41  And Peter said to them, Repent and each one of you be baptized.  ...  Those then who received his word were baptized.

Acts 8:36-38   And as they [Philip and the eunuch were in a chariot] were going along the road, they came upon some water, and the eunuch said, Look water.  What prevents me from being baptized?
Acts 10:48  And he charged them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ....

Acts 22:16  And now, why do you delay? [Ananias' word to Paul 3 days after his conversion (Acts 9:9)]   Rise up and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on His name.

There is a large footnote in the Recovery Version that is published by Living Stream Ministry on this verse; I'm only going to put a few parts of it here: "Baptism brings the repentant people out of their old state into a new one by terminating their old life and germinating them with the new life of Christ that they may become the kingdom people." The Bible shows us clearly that there was no delay between conversion and baptism. We shared with the students that baptism is a public declaration of their salvation. I was particularly touched with Acts 22:16 that Paul after just a few days was asked why do you delay?   So why should a believer be baptized?  Because God says so!
