Why should believers get baptized? There's a lot of verses on it in the Bible and last Friday we went over many of them with the four college students who meet with us. For starters we went over verses from Acts about baptism beginning with Peter's word to those who had gathered at Pentecost. Acts is the record of the apostles and the churches they had established after the Lord's ascension. So that makes it a good place to start. When you look at these verses in Acts, it is clear the disciples were faithful to what the Lord had commanded them to do after His ascension:
Matthew 28:19-20A Go therefore and disciple all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. ...
Acts 2:38, 41 And Peter said to them, Repent and each one of you be baptized. ... Those then who received his word were baptized.
Acts 8:36-38 And as they [Philip and the eunuch were in a chariot] were going along the road, they came upon some water, and the eunuch said, Look water. What prevents me from being baptized?
Acts 10:48 And he charged them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ....
Acts 22:16 And now, why do you delay? [Ananias' word to Paul 3 days after his conversion (Acts 9:9)] Rise up and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on His name.
There is a large footnote in the Recovery Version that is published by Living Stream Ministry on this verse; I'm only going to put a few parts of it here: "Baptism brings the repentant people out of their old state into a new one by terminating their old life and germinating them with the new life of Christ that they may become the kingdom people." The Bible shows us clearly that there was no delay between conversion and baptism. We shared with the students that baptism is a public declaration of their salvation. I was particularly touched with Acts 22:16 that Paul after just a few days was asked why do you delay? So why should a believer be baptized? Because God says so!

Crocheting Scarves is Fun & Easy!
I just looked up this website http://crochet.about.com/library/blbegscarf.htm for crocheting instructions for crocheting a scarf in case others would like to try it! I eyeball it for the width and then Jean showed me after you finish a row, you have to add one more and then you can single or double crochet it.
Here's a picture I took of my younger granddaughter with her scarf on:

My Grandkids Favorite - Gluten Free Peppermint Sugar Cookies
Anyway last weekend I was watching two of my grandchildren, and making some sugar cookies was on the list of things she wanted to do. After tying on our aprons, we started mixing up the cookie dough! She was very capable as you can see from the pictures below for being only three years old!
Gluten Free Peppermint Sugar Cookies
1. Mix together the dry ingredients - Mix together in a large bowl:
(1) 2 ½ c of your favorite gluten free flour mixture (I usually use equal amounts of rice flour, sorghum flour, and tapioca flour)
(2) Stir in leavening: 1/2 t baking soda, 1/2 t cream of tartar, and 1/2 t salt.

(2) Stir in leavening: 1/2 t baking soda, 1/2 t cream of tartar, and 1/2 t salt.
2. Cream together butter & sugar:
(1) In a mixing bowl cream 1/2 cup of butter for a few minutes and then slowly add 1 cup of white sugar and beat for 3 more minutes. (Or use 1 cup of butter if you don't want to reduce the fat.
(2) Then add 1/2 cup of applesauce (if you want full fat, omit), 1 egg, and 1 t peppermint extract and 1 t vanilla extract.
(3) Beat —the more airy and whipped, the better they will taste.

4. Roll out cookies: Sprinkle rice flour on a cutting board and rolling pin, and roll out the dough to ½” and cut into shapes.
5. Bake cookies: Put sprinkles on and bake for 10 minutes at 350. This recipe makes about 30 cookies. The recipe says it makes6 dozen. And yes, they were still good with half applesauce! You couldn't even tell they were both gluten free and low fat!

How Did God Shepherd Jacob in Genesis 48:15?
How many times have you read Psalm 23? Usually when I'm struggling, I"ll read through this psalm, and it will fill me with the sense of Lord's presence. Two weeks ago I was listening to a message on www.lsm.org on the Lord's shepherding.
I learned that God's shepherding started way back in Genesis 48:15 with Jacob: "And he blessed Joseph and said, The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has shepherded me all my life to this day," The brother tied this word to Jacob's dream at Bethel (in Hebrew this means the house of God) which occurred decades earlier where he saw the angels ascending and descending on a ladder and Jacob pouring oil on a stone and saying: "....How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven" (Genesis 28:17). What I heard made me realize that God's shepherding of Jacob was to bring him into the reality of Bethel.
Through all the events of Jacob's life, the scheming for the birthright and the blessing, when he was ripped off by his Uncle Laban for 20 years, when his thigh was touched by God at Peniel, when he lost Rachel at Benjamin's birth, when he lost Joseph--so many heart rending experiences--all these events were God's shepherding of him! He shared that the Lord's shepherding is not mainly to care for just our personal needs, but to take care of our needs for His house.

Do It Yourself Gluten Free Honey Almond Granola
There's something about knowing what's going into what you're eating. And that's why making your own granola makes a lot of sense. It's really not even that hard. I've really come to enjoy making things from scratch!
It's a great rainy day activity and it makes the house smell so yummy! This recipe comes from my Heritage School Cookbook. I have often doubled and tripled this recipe!
Honey Almond Granola
1. Prepare coating: Time this so it is ready right when all the ingredients are ready for it--In a saucepan combine 1 cup of coconut oil or olive oil and 3/4 cup of honey/agave and just let it warm up. Take off the stove and add 1 tsp. of vanilla.
2. Meanwhile warm up the oats - In a 350 degree oven spread the oats on 3 baking sheets and let warm up for about 8 minutes.
3. In a large mixing bowl stir together:
(1) The warmed oats
(2) 1/2 cup of flax seeds or something else! (instead of the wheat germ in the recipe)
(3) 1 cup of sliced almonds, walnuts, pecans or a combination
(4) 1 1/2 cup of coconut flakes
(5) 1/2 cup of raw sunflower seeds
Note: What's great about granola is you can make a lot of your own substitutions. And if it's a little too gooey, add a bit more of something to make it come out right!
3. Prepare the granola:
(1) Pour the oil/honey mixture over the oat mixture and stir until coated.
(2) Put as much as you can on a baking sheet and bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes.
(3) Stir every 7 minutes and continue baking and stirring until toasted.
(4) Put the pan on a rack to cool before putting it in a glass container. If you have a convection oven, you can put two pans in and switch them half way. Watch them carefully though!
4. Add some dried fruit:
(1) 1 cup of raisins (in place of walnuts in recipe or add some of both)
(2) 1/2 cup of chopped dates (or use some dried apples)
(3) Any other fruit like craisins, dried blueberries, etc.

Knowing the Shepherd in the Valley of the Shadow of Death
Ever find yourself in the valley? If you're like me I sometimes forget everything I've ever heard or read about Psalm 23. Sometimes I panic or cry when I'm overwhelmed by the valley. I really liked this line from the Ministry of the Word book I was reading this week: "When we are in the valley, we should simply remain there and rest in the Lord; our resting in the Lord will shorten the valley, reduce the shadow, and remove the death" (Ministry of the Word 173).
No matter what, the Lord is there with us, even when we don't feel it. And these are the times we read the word by faith, we pray by faith, and live completely by faith. We can just rest in His word of promise and in His loving heart towards us. It is comforting to just speak this psalm. Many times this week I just said over and over Jehovah is my shepherd.

Reading The Mystery of Human Life with College Students
Sharing about the Lord with a friend can sometimes make people feel like they don’t know where to start, and that is one reason why we have really enjoyed using this small version of The Mystery of Human life. I don’t even know who consolidated it into this 3 ½ x 4 ½ folded tract, but it is short and clear in the truths it presents.
++8-8-12.jpg)
Anyway a few years ago some of us printed off a few thousand of them so we could hand them out to students with a Bibles for America free study Bible reply card when we went to our university’s Info Fair. A lot of us have felt like our handing these out reminds us of the parable of the Sower in Mark 4--we're just sowing seed. We have to be faithful to do our part and leave the results up to God. Since then we have always kept some handy so we can bring them out and read them with a student that we’re burdened to share the Lord with.

On Friday night my husband had the sense we should ask the students what they would say if a friend ever asked them about God. After hearing a few comments, Mike pulled out this tract, and we read it around the table like we usually do. It meant a little more to me personally because when our Thai student came in that night he told us he had invited his roommate. It still amazes me whenever I read about God’s intention of making man in His image so that man could contain Him. That statement became a springboard to share how man just tries so many things to satisfy himself, but he will not be satisfied until he finds God. He’ll think well this car didn’t satisfy, maybe I’ll try that car, or perhaps I’ll get a bigger house, etc.!
But in order to contain God, fallen man needs redemption! I love this part of the tract. I am so thankful that God didn’t leave us in sin, but He paid the highest price to redeem us. He knew that when He died His divine life would be able to enter into us and regenerate us! What a marvel this is! Don’t you think? I am putting this tract here in case you would like to copy it off and use it when you share with someone else. Sorry, it wouldn't copy the diagrams.
THE MYSTERY OF HUMAN LIFE
Have you ever wondered why you are living in this world and what the purpose of your life is? There are six keys that unlock this mystery.
1. God's Plan
God desires to express Himself through man (Rom. 8:29). For this purpose, He created man in His own image (Gen. 1:26). Just as a glove is made in the image of a hand to contain a hand, so also man is made in the image of God to contain God. By receiving God as his content, man can express God (2 Cor. 4:7).
2. Man
To fulfill His plan, God made man as a vessel (Rom. 9:21-24). This vessel has three parts: body, soul, and spirit (I Thess. 5:23). The body contacts and receives the things of the physical realm. The soul. the mental faculty, contacts and receives the things of the psychological realm. And the human spirit, the innermost part of man, was made to contact and receive God Himself (John 4:24). Man was created not merely to contain food in his stomach, or to contain knowledge in his mind, but to contain God in his spirit (Eph. 5:18).
But before man could receive God as life into his spirit, sin entered into him (Rom. 5:12). Sin deadened his spirit (Eph. 2:1), made him an enemy of God in his mind (Col. 1:21), and transmuted his body into sinful flesh (Gen. 6:3; Rom. 6:12). Thus, sin damaged all three parts of man, alienating him from God. In this condition, man could not receive God.
4. Christ's Redemption for God's Dispensing
Nevertheless, man's fall did not deter God from fulfilling His original plan. In order to accomplish His plan, God first became a man called Jesus Christ (John 1:1, 14). Then Christ died on the cross to redeem man (Eph. 1:7), thus taking away his sin (John 1:29) and bringing him back to God (Eph. 2:13). Finally, in resurrection, He became the life-giving Spirit (1 Cor. 15:45b) so that He could dispense His unsearchably rich life into man's spirit (John 20:22; 3:6).
5. Man's Regeneration
Since Christ has become the life giving Spirit, man can now receive God's life into his spirit. The Bible calls this regeneration (1 Pet. 1:3; John 3:3). To receive this life, man needs to repent to God and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 20:21; 16:31).
To be regenerated, simply come to the Lord with an open and honest heart and say to Him:
Lord Jesus, I am a sinner
I need You.
Thank You for dying for me.
Lord Jesus, forgive me.
Cleanse me from all my sins.
I believe You rose from the dead.
I receive You right now as my Savior and life.
Come into me! Fill me with Your life!
Lord Jesus, I give myself to You for Your purpose.
